Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India have moved well beyond their original role as offshore support units to become strategic innovation hubs that are reshaping the country’s tech sector. What started primarily as cost-efficient back-office operations for multinational corporations now includes high-value work such as AI and machine learning, product development, cybersecurity, data analytics, and global decision-making roles. India’s deep talent pool, strong digital infrastructure and supportive policy environment have made it a preferred destination for these centres.
As a result, GCCs now account for a substantial share of India’s IT exports and grow faster than traditional Indian IT services firms, challenging their market position. Many multinational clients are choosing to build their own GCCs in India rather than outsourcing work to third parties. GCCs also influence industries beyond IT, including automotive, healthcare, banking and retail, with centres driving innovation in advanced technologies. Over 1,700 GCCs operate in India, employing millions of professionals and contributing to the creation of high-skilled jobs. Despite challenges such as infrastructure gaps and intense competition for talent, GCCs are expanding into Tier-2 cities and are projected to generate significant revenue growth by 2030.
