The GCC forms part of the group’s expansion into India, combining the country’s maritime talent base with its technology capabilities. Navi Mumbai was selected for its Grade-A commercial infrastructure, connectivity and established business ecosystem, alongside access to maritime and technology talent.

Headquartered in Limassol, Cyprus, Columbia Group is a global maritime services group with businesses spanning ship management and related maritime services. Its India GCC represents a further expansion of the group’s international operating footprint.

A MARITIME COMPANY’S GCC MOVE

The establishment of Columbia Group’s India GCC is notable because it comes from a sector where domain expertise is particularly important. Maritime operations increasingly depend on digital systems, data, technology-enabled coordination and globally integrated processes.

Rather than locating its India capability solely around conventional technology delivery, Columbia Group is establishing a centre that combines operational and digital capabilities to support its global business. This reflects the broader evolution of GCCs from transactional support centres into integrated extensions of global enterprises.

WORKPLACE DESIGNED FOR GLOBAL COLLABORATION

Designed and delivered by Team One Architects, the 20,000 sq ft facility adopts a flexible workplace model built around what the architects describe as “Resilient Collaboration.”

The workplace incorporates modular planning, collaborative meeting spaces, acoustic focus zones and technology-enabled facilities, including global video conferencing and digital room-booking systems. The design also incorporates maritime-inspired elements reflecting Columbia Group’s business identity.

“

People are central to how workplaces perform. This GCC was designed to inspire and motivate our teams while delivering the technology, amenities, and operational readiness required for a globally connected organisation.

– Demetris Chrysostomou, Deputy CEO, Columbia Group

Industry Insights

Proofpoint’s expansion highlights several broader shifts in India’s capability-centre ecosystem:

  1. GCCs Are Moving Deeper into Industry-Specific Capabilities: Columbia Group’s entry illustrates how GCCs are increasingly being established by companies outside traditional technology and financial-services sectors. Maritime, logistics and transportation enterprises are building India-based capabilities that combine domain expertise, technology and global operations.
  2. Location Strategy Is Becoming More Sector-Specific: Navi Mumbai demonstrates that the next phase of India’s GCC expansion need not be concentrated only in established technology centres. For maritime and logistics businesses, access to domain talent, connectivity and a relevant business ecosystem can be as important as the depth of generic technology talent.
  3. Operational Capability and Digital Capability Are Converging: The Columbia model is significant because the centre is positioned as both an operational and digital hub. This reflects a broader GCC evolution in which technology is increasingly embedded within core business processes rather than operating as a standalone support function.
  4. Specialist GCCs Can Broaden India’s Next Wave of Growth: A 220-member centre may be modest compared with some large GCC announcements, but its significance lies in the specialisation of the mandate. The continued entry of sector-specific global enterprises can deepen India’s GCC ecosystem by adding new domains – including maritime and shipping – to its capability base.

THE ROAD AHEAD

Columbia Group’s India GCC signals a broader shift in how global enterprises are approaching capability expansion: the opportunity is no longer limited to large technology hubs or generic service delivery. As GCCs become more closely tied to industry-specific operations, specialised locations such as Navi Mumbai can emerge as credible destinations by combining domain talent, technology capability and global connectivity.

Another crucial point that this targeted expansion reinforces is a vital economic reality: the future of international logistics and smart shipping will be engineered, monitored, and scaled from specialized intelligence hubs deep within the Indian subcontinent.
