Chennai | 13 February 2026: KLA Corporation, a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing equipment and process control solutions, has announced a $400 million investment to establish a large-scale Research and Development campus in Chennai. Formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Tamil Nadu, the 12-acre campus will have a potential built-up capacity of 1.5 million square feet and is expected to create up to 4,000 high-skilled semiconductor engineering jobs over the next decade.

Scaling the Frontier of Semiconductor Engineering

The Chennai facility will become KLA’s largest integrated R&D campus outside its California headquarters. It will focus on high-performance computing, semiconductor process control software, advanced metrology systems, and process-enabling technologies used in chip manufacturing.

KLA develops inspection and metrology equipment that semiconductor manufacturers use to detect defects and optimize production yields. These systems are critical to ensuring chips meet performance specifications, particularly at advanced technology nodes where nanometer-scale precision determines manufacturing success.

“India has been a critical part of KLA’s global growth story for over two decades. This MoU continues our long-term vision to scale India as a global centre for AI- and software-led semiconductor innovation.”

– Dominic David, President of KLA India

The scale of the campus signals confidence in India’s semiconductor engineering capabilities. The projected 4,000 jobs will include roles in process engineering, optical systems design, embedded systems, software development, and AI-driven data analytics for semiconductor manufacturing. These functions require expertise in semiconductor physics, computational modeling, advanced optics, and large-scale data processing.

India’s Position in the Global Semiconductor Value Chain

By expanding semiconductor R&D in Chennai, KLA is integrating India more deeply into the global semiconductor value chain, particularly in process control technology and yield optimization software.

The Chennai R&D campus will contribute to AI-driven semiconductor manufacturing systems, combining data science with semiconductor domain expertise. This integration reflects a broader industry shift toward software-defined manufacturing and advanced analytics in chip production.

KLA’s ₹3,600 crore investment represents a long-term commitment to semiconductor innovation in India. Establishing the company’s largest R&D campus outside the United States indicates that Chennai will play a sustained role in next-generation semiconductor process development.

The scale of the facility and hiring plan suggests that India will contribute directly to the development of inspection and metrology systems used in advanced chip fabrication worldwide. Over time, semiconductor tools and software engineered in Chennai are expected to support global manufacturing across automotive, AI computing, telecommunications, and consumer electronics sectors.

“KLA’s decision to establish its new R&D and innovation campus in Tamil Nadu reinforces the state’s role in the global semiconductor value chain, and confidence in Tamil Nadu’s governance stability, policy clarity and deep engineering talent pool.”

– T R B Rajaa, Minister for Industries, Investment Promotion & Commerce

For Tamil Nadu, the presence of major semiconductor players such as KLA, alongside other global equipment and chip companies, strengthens the regional ecosystem. Large-scale R&D infrastructure attracts suppliers, supports specialized academic programs, and builds cumulative expertise in semiconductor engineering.

As India advances its semiconductor mission through policy support and ecosystem development, investments of this scale reinforce the country’s transition from an emerging participant to a strategic innovation hub in global semiconductor manufacturing technology.
