German companies are significantly increasing their offshore presence in India by expanding Global Capability Centers (GCCs) to more than 150 locations, employing over 130,000 professionals across engineering, digital, and business roles, according to a recent Zinnov report in collaboration with the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce. These GCCs act as strategic units that extend headquarters functions into India, enabling German firms to manage product development roadmaps, speed up digital initiatives, enhance global processes, and drive innovation more effectively. The growth of these centers, particularly among Mittelstand companies, reflects a 108 percent rise over the past five years, highlighting India’s role as a critical hub for global research, engineering, and digital transformation.

Key insights show that about 56 percent of GCC talent is focused on engineering and research and development, with Bengaluru and Pune accounting for roughly 80 percent of AI and machine-learning specialists supporting these operations. More than half of GCCs have active collaborations with Indian universities and start-ups to build future-ready capabilities, while a considerable number run shared services and mature Global Business Services functions. Leaders from Zinnov emphasize that India has become more than a delivery location; it is a strategic center for value creation, innovation, and competitive global growth.
