Fuel Solutions is a new shared services organization launched by the California, Nevada, and Utah credit union leagues to help them work together on non-advocacy functions without merging into a single entity. At a time when many leagues are consolidating for scale, Fuel Solutions offers an alternative that preserves each league’s identity, local governance, and focus on state-level advocacy while gaining operational efficiencies in areas like education, professional development, marketing, communications, and training.
Structured as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Fuel Solutions focuses on charitable and educational support services, acting much like a shared services unit for back-office operations across the three associations. The model was designed so that leagues can benefit from scale where it makes sense, without diluting their grassroots advocacy work, which leaders say relies on local presence and trust.
Early results show expanded training and education offerings and cost savings, while credit unions continue to engage directly with their home leagues. The organization’s founders believe this framework could serve as a model for other associations seeking a middle ground between full merger and complete independence.
