BENGALURU | 18 August 2026: Warner Music Group (WMG) is expanding its global technology operations in India with a new technology hub in Bengaluru, scheduled to open in September. The hub will strengthen WMG’s capabilities across engineering, data infrastructure, artificial intelligence and digital products, supporting its global music and entertainment business.

The Bengaluru operation is being positioned as part of WMG’s broader global engineering network, with teams expected to work across areas including music distribution, data infrastructure, audience and marketing data products, AI and other emerging technologies.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • New Global Technology Hub: WMG is set to open its Bengaluru technology hub in September 2026 as part of its expanding global technology organisation.
  • Engineering and Data Focus: The hub will support capabilities spanning software engineering, data platforms, infrastructure and digital products, with current hiring visible across multiple technology disciplines.
  • AI and Emerging Technologies: Bengaluru teams will contribute to WMG’s broader technology initiatives, including the use of AI and emerging technologies across the global music ecosystem.
  • India Technology Leadership: The expansion is being led by Mahesh Rao, Director of Software Engineering and Site Lead for India, who reports to WMG Chief Technology Officer Leho Nigul.

Operating as a global entertainment, Warner Music Group commands a vast ecosystem spanning recorded music, music publishing, and artist services. Today’s commercial music industry is no longer just about talent discovery; it is fundamentally a data-driven enterprise. Delivering millions of high-fidelity streams simultaneously, tracking micro-royalties across borderless platforms, and personalizing algorithmic discovery for global audiences requires hyperscalable, software-defined infrastructure.

WMG has maintained a presence in India for six years, anchored by its Mumbai headquarters under the leadership of Jay Mehta, Managing Director of Warner Music India. However, the activation of this dedicated technology capability center in Bengaluru marks a decisive evolution. The firm is aggressively pivoting to ensure it commands the sovereign technological firepower needed to dominate the algorithm-heavy future of streaming and digital rights management.

BUILDING TECHNOLOGY FOR THE GLOBAL MUSIC BUSINESS

Technology has become increasingly central to the global music industry’s operating model. From managing music metadata and distribution to analysing consumption patterns and supporting artist and audience engagement, digital platforms and data infrastructure now reinforce a significant part of the industry’s value chain. WMG’s Bengaluru hub will contribute to this technology ecosystem, particularly across data and engineering capabilities.

Current Bengaluru roles listed by WMG include data warehouse and integration engineers, backend engineers, data platform engineers, DevOps engineers, infrastructure specialists and product roles.

One of WMG’s Bengaluru-based data platform roles describes the team’s work as supporting the ingestion, processing and use of data related to artists, songwriters, music consumption and digital platforms. The underlying platform supports areas including marketing optimisation, performance tracking, rights acquisition and distribution, machine-learning applications and generative AI use cases.

“

Bengaluru isn’t just an extension of our tech team – it’s central to WMG’s global engineering strategy. We’re investing heavily in local leadership, modern tech stacks, and globally competitive compensation to attract engineers who want to solve complex, high-throughput systems problems at the intersection of music and AI.

– Leho Nigul, Chief Technology Officer, Warner Music Group

MUSIC, DATA AND AI

The Bengaluru expansion reflects the increasing convergence of media, technology and AI.

WMG’s technology organisation already works across areas including distribution, global licensing, royalty management, fan engagement and AI projects, according to the company’s leadership profile for Nigul.

The new India hub adds engineering capacity to this broader technology ecosystem. Its focus on data infrastructure is particularly significant. WMG’s engineering teams are building platforms that consolidate and process information across artists, songwriters, music consumption and digital partners, creating the data foundation for business intelligence, analytics, search, discovery and AI-enabled applications.

The expansion therefore represents more than conventional IT support. Bengaluru-based teams are being integrated into product and platform engineering activities that support WMG’s global operations and digital strategy.

“

The calibre of talent in this market is exceptional, and we’re looking for ambitious engineers and innovators who want to help shape the future of the global music industry.

– Mahesh Rao, Director of Software Engineering and Site Lead WMG India

INDIA’S DUAL ROLE: CREATIVE MARKET AND TECHNOLOGY BASE

WMG established its India presence six years ago, with its operations anchored in Mumbai. The Bengaluru technology hub now adds a dedicated engineering dimension to the company’s India footprint. This creates an interesting dual model for the company: Mumbai supports WMG’s engagement with India’s music and creative ecosystem, while Bengaluru strengthens its access to specialised technology and engineering talent.

For the wider capability ecosystem, the development also illustrates the growing sectoral diversity of India’s global technology landscape. Technology hubs are no longer limited to financial services, enterprise software or traditional IT services. Companies across media, entertainment and consumer platforms are increasingly building India-based teams to support core global technology platforms.

Industry Insights

  1. Entertainment companies are becoming technology organisations: Digital distribution, streaming, data, AI and audience intelligence are making engineering capabilities increasingly central to the music business.
  2. India’s capability ecosystem is diversifying: The expansion demonstrates how global companies outside traditional GCC-heavy sectors are building specialised technology teams in India.
  3. Data platforms are becoming strategic infrastructure: WMG’s Bengaluru engineering roles point to a focus on building and scaling the data foundations that support marketing, performance analytics, distribution and AI-enabled applications.
  4. Bengaluru continues to attract specialised engineering mandates: WMG’s decision to establish a dedicated technology hub reinforces the city’s role as a location for global product, platform, infrastructure and AI engineering.

WAY FORWARD

The expansion of WMG’s Bengaluru technology hub adds a new dimension to India’s global capability landscape. For WMG, the expansion provides access to engineering and technology talent that will support its global digital ecosystem across data, infrastructure, distribution and AI-enabled innovation.

For India’s GCC and enterprise technology ecosystem, the announcement is an indicator that the next wave of capability expansion will increasingly come from new industries and specialised domains, where technology teams in India are integrated directly into global product and platform development.

The significance of the Bengaluru hub, therefore, lies not just in WMG’s entry into the city’s technology ecosystem, but in what it represents: the continued convergence of domain expertise, digital platforms and AI in the next generation of global capability centres.
