TUMKUR | May 21, 2026: MANN+HUMMEL has officially inaugurated its new Global Technology & Innovation Center in Tumkur, Karnataka. The new Tumkur facility now stands as its largest development center outside of Germany, anchoring more than one-third of the group’s global R&D workforce.

While the move comes alongside a broader ₹100 crore combined investment across its Indian engineering and manufacturing operations (including a new footprint in Pune), the decision to anchor its core R&D engine in Tumkur highlights a critical evolution in India’s industrial ecosystem. It proves that peripheral, Tier-2 hubs are now fully equipped with the talent and infrastructure necessary to anchor complex, global technology operations.

MANN+HUMMEL is a global family-owned leader in filtration technology headquartered in Ludwigsburg, Germany. Founded in 1941, the company develops liquid and air filters, intake systems, and water purification membranes for the automotive, industrial, and life sciences sectors. With a legacy spanning over 80 years, in over 80 locations worldwide with approximately 21,200 employees and generating sales of EUR 4.5 billion, its Indian division is a strategic, high-growth market operating major aftermarket brands like MANN-FILTER (for high-end cars) and Wix Filters (for the wider Asian vehicle range). The launch of Global Technology & Innovation Center further strengthens India as a global hub for innovation for the company.

The Shift to Strategic Sovereignty

Tumkur hub marks a fundamental transition in the company’s India strategy moving from “support” to “strategic ownership.” For over two decades, the Indian engineering team has contributed to global projects, but the new center creates a unified environment where products are designed, tested, and validated for the world.

• Integrated Ecosystem: The facility houses advanced research labs, testing infrastructure, and digital engineering suites under one roof.
• Global Benchmarking: This is a “sovereign-standard” node that will drive product development for mobility and industrial applications across 80 global locations.

With this investment, MANN+HUMMEL is placing a heavy bet on sustainability-led engineering. The Tumkur facility is specifically tasked with solving the environmental challenges of 2026:

• Circular Engineering: Developing filtration systems using recycled materials and eco-friendly designs to reduce lifecycle emissions.
• Clean Tech Frontiers: Focusing on high-stakes innovations in water purification, industrial emissions control, and air quality improvement.
• Green Mobility: Providing the filtration backbone for the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and high-efficiency industrial power.

While the company maintains a corporate presence in Bengaluru, anchoring its primary global innovation engine in Tumkur was a calculated decision.

Kurk Wilks, President and CEO of the MANN+HUMMEL Group, noted that India was a “natural choice” for the expansion due to its sheer density of engineering talent. Currently, the country already hosts more than one-third of the company’s global engineering and R&D workforce.

By scaling in Tumkur, the company avoids the hyper-competitive attrition cycles of Tier-1 IT hubs. Instead, it gains access to a stable, dedicated pool of core industrial and mechanical engineering talent the exact workforce needed to bridge the gap between digital software and physical manufacturing. The company plans to add 300 to 400 specialized roles, tapping into a deep pool of engineering talent seeking high-value careers outside of traditional metropolitan congestion.
